The goal of the program is to provide support for pre-baccalaureate research training to help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to assume leadership roles related to the Nations biomedical, neuroscience, behavioral and clinical research agenda for mental health.The specific objectives are to: (a) increase the number of well-prepared undergraduate students from diverse backgrounds who complete a research training program leading to a research doctorate (Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent) in biomedical, neuroscience, behavioral, or clinical sciences relevant to mental health research; and (b) develop and strengthen the undergraduate research training curricula with relevance to mental health.
Dec. 24: The Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York (CHFWCNY) is seeking proposals for 18-month collaborative projects that focus on improving transitions of care for frail elders by integrating the use of the Care Transitions Model with the newly developed Next Step in Care: Family Caregivers and Health Care Professional Working Together. The deadline for applications is Jan. 15, 2009.
Funding News: Advancing Colorado's Health Care
Dec. 18: Six communities across Colorado received funding through Advancing Colorado’s Mental Health Care, to integrate mental health systems with the goals of improving access to and the effectiveness of mental health services for those most severely affected by mental illness.
CDC Grant Funding Opportunity Announcements
Dec. 20: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides approximately $7 billion in more than 14,000 separate grants and contracts. This link is to a current list of grant-funded opportunities through the CDC. You will want to check it form time to time to keep abreast of changes in funding availability. If you are interested in a federal contract through the CDC, it would be a good idea to check HERE and then go HERE (to the federal business opportunities web site).
Mid-Career Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research
Dec. 20: The purpose of the Midcareer Investigator Award in Patient-Oriented Research is to provide support to mid-career health-professional doctorates or equivalent who are typically at the Associate Professor level or the equivalent (see Section III. Eligible Individuals) for protected time to devote to patient-oriented research (POR) and to act as research mentors primarily for clinical residents, clinical fellows and/or junior clinical faculty.

Dec. 20: The purpose of the NIH Academic Career Award is to provide support to increase the pool of individuals with academic and research expertise to become academic researchers and to enhance the educational or research capacity at the grantee sponsoring grantee institution. The Academic Career Award supports Development awards for more junior level candidates and Leadership awards for more senior individuals with acknowledged scientific expertise and leadership skills.

Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award
Dec. 20: The purpose of the Mentored Patient-Oriented Research (POR) Career Development Award (K23) is to support the career development of investigators who have made a commitment to focus their research endeavors on patient-oriented research.This mechanism provides support for three to five years of supervised study and research for clinically trained professionals who have the potential to develop into productive, clinical investigators focusing on patient-oriented research.

Dec. 19, 2008: The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), seek to support collaborative intervention trials in the treatment, prevention or rehabilitation of those with mental disorders and alcohol use disorders and comorbid mental disorders. Support is also sought for other collaborative clinical studies, including but not limited to mental health services research, AIDS, genetics, psychopathology, stigma, and cultural and social processes. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) should be used when two or more sites are needed to complete the study.

AHRQ Health Services Research Demonstration and Dissemination Grants (R18)
Agency for Health Care Research and Quality, Modification 1
-Support improvements in health outcomes. Drawing from literature on variations in clinical practice and associated outcomes, the documented increase in the prevalence of chronic disease, and growing interest in the impact of different delivery modalities and financing arrangements on the outcomes of care, AHRQ seeks to support research to understand and improve decision-making at all levels of the health care system, the outcomes of health care, and, in particular, what works, for whom, when, and at what cost.
-Strengthen quality measurement and improvement. AHRQ is interested in a broad array of research topics, including studies to develop valid and reliable measures of the process and outcomes of care, causation and prevention of errors in health care, strategies for incorporating quality measures into programs of quality improvement, and dissemination and implementation of validated quality improvement mechanisms.
-Identify strategies to improve access, foster appropriate use, and reduce unnecessary expenditures. This area focuses on issues pertaining to the types of health care services Americans use, the cost of these services and sources of payment, determinants of access to care, and whether particular approaches to health care delivery and financing, or characteristics of the health care market, alter behaviors in ways that improve access and promote cost-effective use of health care resources.

$5.15 Million Provided to Support Local Health Care Needs

AHRQ Grants for Health Services Research Dissertation (R36)
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) announces its continued interest in the health services research dissertation grant program (R36). This program supports research undertaken as part of an academic program to qualify for a doctorate. The AHRQ dissertation award supports dissertation research costs for students in accredited research doctoral programs in the United States (including Puerto Rico, and other U.S. Territories or possessions). Dissertation applications must focus on methodological and research topics that address the mission and research interests of AHRQ noted below.
